Love this. And jeebus, it's SO true- mourning doves really are dim, though beautiful, little creatures. I watch them at the bird feeder- it takes them many tries to stick the landing on the roof of it, then it takes them 20 minutes to successfully hop down to the tray, then they hang out forever bogarting the food and clucking.

One year I had a pair of robins setting up house in the camellia bushes in front of my porch, presenting much the same dilemma (sans impressionable children); my cat Buddy had set up his own camp on the porch railing, practically drooling at the sight.

I actually went and bought a sheet of plexiglass, some wood trim and a box of screws, and constructed what I hoped would be a “viewing shield” on the edge of my porch in hopes of keeping him away from the nest… (“Ha!” you rightly exclaim, “like that would work!”). Luckily the birds moved on before the inevitable gruesome scenarios could play themselves out.

p.s. glad to see I’m not the only one with my “NO on 8” sign still up in front of my house ☺

I was pregnant when the robins in our garden hatched (small birds, not like those giants that I've spotted in the US); imagine my horror as the original Lula (our rather fat cat) took it upon herself to bring me gifts on our garden table every day. Nothing like trying to save/bring back to life a robin babe while your hormones all over the place... I think that I must have cried all week. I'm so glad she can't touch the swallows here.

Lovely creatures aren't they? One day last summer I counted eleven in our backyard (yes, someone was sans mate). They were all sitting on the ground together, a few perched on a small log. I imagined it was a committee meeting of sorts.
