What your dad said is incredibly beautiful, and once again your writing put a little warm shine on my day. Happy Baba's Day!

Thank you, all of youse.

And re: Bettelheim: Wikipedia sez, "Bettelheim posits that if children are allowed to read about the trials, tribulations, successes and failures encountered by the heroes of fairy tales, this will better prepare them for the trials, tribulations, successes and failures that they will encounter in their own lives." From which I extrapolate that our lil' monkey will now, after the rabbit hole from hell, feel adequately prepared for... Adolescence? Standardized college entrance exams? The first time she brings home a date to meet the Baba?

As it is, we make it out of Children’s Fairyland intact, though the lil’ monkey notes immediately to Mama, when we pick her up, that we most certainly did not find any fairies there.

Well, that right there is a good life lesson. Very little is what it's cracked up to be, kiddo.

Ahh, LD, as mentioned before, your one-two punch is deadly. Make 'em laugh, then make 'em cry. I'm smote.

That laundry chute thing looks downright dangerous. I mean really, Bettelheim much?

Oh, and let's not forget the straight blond family across the street who called out "Happy Baba's Day!" as we went off to brunch. Gotta love Berkeley. (Although the whole point of your blog is that you can find community wherever you are.)

LookyDaddy - sounds like you will be a lot like the old guys I deal with in my line of work. I am an Adult Protection social worker. My advice is that you never let the social worker in...tell him or her that your kids check on your regularly.

We were so thrilled to have shared that first part of the day with you. Our lil monkey has taken to repeating often that your lil monkey has a mama and a baba, just like her. We've been reading Heather Has Two Mommies a lot lately -- we got it probably a year ago and read it to her then, but it has definitely taken on new significance as our daughter begins to explore family structure. Last night we read it again and then listed all the families we know that have two moms. She now thinks it's a really funny joke to say in a sly way, "I don't have a daddy!" like "I don't have blue hair!" Like she knows it's a truly silly notion because that's just not what her family's all about. We are really, really blessed that way. Our children are blessed too.

And a final comment: wow, what a baba's day it was for you. That brunch was about it for us for the day. You should be very proud of your multi-activity abilities. Just look what you can do when your lil monkey doesn't nap.

LD, may you shuffle with dignity toward infirmity. When infirmity knocks on my door, I plan on hitting it in the berries with my cane. And that goes for anybody else that comes by who can't play a good game of cribbage. Or dominoes. Or doesn't bring me porn.

Oh, I'm going to be an ugly old man.

Well, given how dark those fairy tales are in their original form, I don't blame you for getting the heebie jeebies.

Happy Baba's day!

I love the blue toes! And the sweet sweet stories. Keep up the good work and I hope all of the generations celebrate many more Baba's Days together.

I feel like I was there with you!

The part about your own father made me cry. This was my first father's day without my step-father who fathered me in a way my own father never could. This post made me think of him.
