I never knew exactly what the artist was trying to convey, but it always looked to me like she was curled up in a warm and welcoming womb. The shower of gold is the placenta, and the vagina is right beneath her butt. She's in the breach position and not wanting to go anywhere - just curled up in a uterine embrace. But maybe that's what I saw because I'm a dyke. I had that poster of Danae on my wall all through college.
