We needed stadium seating but it was fabulous! Our second baby arrived so quickly that we barely made it to the hospital (literally, she was crowning when I walked into the hospital). So, our birth team basically arrived as the baby was born and put on my chest. It's amazing to be surrounded by so much love. I know...sounds cheesy but it is true. Good luck! I rather think that most LGBT families <i>begin</i> more extended than nuclear, since to build our families we have no choice but to reach outside our immediate relationships (via adoption, or alternative insemination, or what have you). I believe the quiet truth about LGBT families -- and any family built this way, from the outside in -- is that it actually takes <i>effort</i> to keep them isolated and nuclear. Which seems to me to be nothin' but a good thing.
